The mixed media series Learning How to Cook Everything was born out of a collaboration between the artist and her husband to intimately document his foray into cooking as developing a life skill, a creative endeavor, and an avenue to continue a family tradition after his father’s death.The title is a reference to New York Times writer Mark Bittman’s seminal cookbook, which served as the how-to manual to her husband’s otherwise unmentored efforts. Using traditional and non-traditional negatives and incorporating collage, the artist sought to weave together highly personal photographs with images culled from wider cultural sources.

The Carlsons of Cadillac series is the product of many long conversations with my maternal grandmother, who drew biographical sketches of her parents and siblings for me while we pored over family photographs.A photographer in her youth and the last remaining Carlson, Gamma recalled her Michigan dairy farm family in vivid, sometimes heartbreaking detail. After our exhaustive interviews, I asked that she assign a color to each individual.

...Axel had a temper, so he is red...Al was rather dapper and owned a handsome grey suit, so he is grey...

It was with this rich stock that The Carlsons portrait series was created.

An installation of their artifacts, historical documents, family pictures, and texts is on display in the window of Two Brothers Beauty Supply on Eddy at Westminster Street. Baba Yaga is an old witch woman known in Slavic fairy tales as an antagonist with an appetite for young children. Most of her depictions have the old woman flying around the forest atop a giant mortar, wielding a pestle, and living in a hut mounted on a pair of chicken legs. While she can play the role of sage to lost souls, her character is consistently solitary.

The Paws Family Through Exhibition

This exhibition tells the story of The Paws Family, as it was discovered by two sisters and then relayed to their daughter/niece. A well-to-do family that made its wealth in textiles at the turn of the century, the Paws are compelling in their intriguing family history and diverse value systems & aesthetic sensibilities. They are a living and growing, sprawling rabbit clan served by a respectable staff and housed in numerous locations across this country, though they are primarily based in New England. Their story can be a bit unwieldy, full of drama and intrigue; but then, of course, most families' stories are.

This exhibition of their living artifacts, historical documents, family pictures, and texts aims to allow viewers to immerse themselves in the Paws and their history. Their private lives, as told through the accompanying private correspondence between two sisters, has been thrown open and laid bare for the viewer. Our hope is that by sharing their reality, the viewer's own reality is enriched.
